I came up with the idea for "The Hip Klip" around 2000 (or so) while out dancing at a club with my bandmate. I had been living in Nashville for a few years trying my darnedest at becoming a rock star. (You can still hear my former band which had a couple near-breaks but never made at our website: at http://theantidote.net) I thought that it would be nice to have a little pocket that can clip to your pants when you don't have pockets so you don't have to worry about a purse. I was sure someone had already thought of it and had it available to buy on the internet. I went home to look it up and found nothing.
I had the idea and developed it to a point but had absolutely no money to put into it being a starving artist and all. By that time I let the idea fall by the way side but kept it in the back of my mind always waiting for someone to come out with it first. During this time the love of my life whom I had met 10 year prior moved in with me and we started a successful web design and hosting business. After having a child in 2004 we moved to the Ocean City, MD area where we had originally met, bought a house, and focused on building our business.
Dec. 14, 2006 at 4:00am I was rushed to the hospital after having a grand mal seizure in my sleep. Tests were done and I was told "the results aren't normal". I had a mass in my brain. Surgery was performed four days later to remove the mass which we found out 2 days later was a grade II oligodendroglioma tumor. It's a rare and slow growing tumor so if you're going to have a cancerous brain tumor that's the best one to have ;-) I went through radiation and chemo and was told by the doctors that someone with my condition on average has 10 years to live. Wow.
That certainly put things into perspective and I decided to once and for all pursue my Hip Klip idea. I began working hard on the clip design and began looking for suppliers. I found a company to do a custom clip for me. Though I had the money to now go for it I am not a sales woman. My husband's sister offered to partner with me on it and most importantly to sell it. It was a match made in heaven since she is now one of my best friends and a sales woman extraordinaire.
